Broken Romantics: A Vicious Song Cycle by Emma Dean

This is a show for the warriors of love, the ragtag-hearted heroes, the beautiful, the brave, the healed and the crushed. This is a show just for you, my fractured darling; a show that you can lose yourself in and find yourself in.

Let us welcome you to Broken Romantics: A Vicious Song Cycle.

Join internationally acclaimed songstress, Emma Dean, for a night of music, misadventure, and mischief. Revel in the messiness of what it means to be human. Raise a glass to your own imperfections, and perhaps... fall in love.

Emma - joined by musicians Tony Dean, Richard Grantham, and Katie Swan, alongside astonishing physical theatre performer Jamie Kendall - will delight and entertain you with a decadent program that is part cabaret, part song cycle. Featuring Emma's original music, as well as twisted covers of songs by Sia, The Foo Fighters, and more…

To anyone who has ever felt broken… we sing for you.

Irene Nicola presents: Revenge

Irene Nicola, cabaret performer and human woman, has had it up to here. Tired of answering a barrage of questions, such as: “Has she found a real job yet? Will she bail out her family, again? What even is a gender gap, and by the way, how long until she will have children? Tick tock!” Combined with the pressures of being judged constantly for the responses she provides, she has come up with the perfect solution. Revenge.A sassy takedown of gender politics, the patriarchy, the arts industry - even her husband! - no one is safe from this sweet yet sultry burlesque musical comedienne. Part feminist essay, part manifesto, with all original soundtrack, prepare for striptease tinged with smarm, self-destructive singing, and sharp, subversive stand-up. You want some salt to go with your vinegar? Done. It’s Revenge. She’s coming for you.

"Fun, cerebral, sexy" - Acting Factory.

Warnings: Strong Language, Nudity.

Captain Anchor presents: Hello Sailor

Captain Anchor, the small Irish sailor with the big voice, is on his maiden voyage to Australia. He’s sweet. He loves his showtunes. And he’s single, gents. It’s the greatest party you’ve never been invited to: salsa, singing and flamboyant costumes; ballads, burlesque and big brash Broadway numbers. Hello Sailor promises a night of fun and frivolity as these two cabaret crooners share stories of love, the sea, and finding fulfillment in oneself, no matter how far away from home they might be.

A first time collaboration and introduction between Captain Anchor and Irene Nicola, Hello Sailor plays for one night only at The Newsagency!

DEEPSEA LIGHTS: SUMMER MIXTAPE

Hey beautiful human,

This is Gemma from Deepsea Lights.

So I made you a mix CD. You know, like how people used to make each other tapes? I’ve included some of my favourite music from Sydney, stuff I’d like to share with you. It’s kind of a way of telling someone you like them or something like that. Anyway…. They are all playing in January at this wicked venue called The Newsagency for their Sideshow Festival. Maybe you want to join me? We play. You enjoy.

Happy Summer,

Deepsea Lights

Katie Elle Reeve in 'Neighbourhood Watch'

Katie Elle Reeve has something to say. Well actually, she has a lot to say, but she's doing it through song, so it's okay. When you hear what she has to say you're sure to admit that you've had those thoughts yourself but were too afraid to share them. Katie isn't. She's going to tell you exactly what she thinks about herself, about her neighbours and about you! In this hilarious one-woman show featuring a score of her original music, Katie proves that sometimes she's a little too honest for her own good!

SPICE! A Singalong

SPICE! A Singalong

Bring your best mates, your Mama, even your Last Time Lover. Do Something Kinda Funny while a star-studded cast perform Spice in its entirety. Sing along, with all the 90s nostalgia and girl power you can muster. Who Do You Think You Are?!? Just Say You’ll Be There, already!

It has been 20 years since Posh, Baby, Sporty, Scary and Ginger descended that iconic staircase telling us all about what we want, and also about what we really, really want. With a brilliantly clashy combo of pigtails, crop-tops, bright lycra and debatably “classy” stylettos, they worked their way into our ears, our history books and our wallets hearts.

For two nights only, Sideshow Festival audiences are invited to don their finest, trashiest 90s grrl-power garb*, grab a plastic glass of bubbles and sing the entire album from start to finish at the top of their lungs. The album is played by a live band, featuring five of Australia’s finest singers taking on ten of the 90s most memorable anthems.

Created and performed by Maeve Marsden, Libby Wood, Alison Avron, Benjamin Kiehne & Sepora, this is an hour of pure, unadulterated joy, nostalgia and grrl power. Sold out for Sydney Comedy Festival, bookings are highly recommended.

Sideshow Block Party: Dan Romeo, Dobby & Particles

Sideshow Festival is excited to present Block Party to the local Sydney masses.

This time we’re substituting the fairy bread, a cheeky pav’, and the lukewarm tinnys with the likes of stenchy guitars and rhymes that our neighbours will be hearing for miles.

We are honoured to be joined by some of Sydney’s finest: the hearty roars of Dan Romeo, the flavoured flows of rapper Dobby, and rockers Particles.

Dan Romeo

Influenced by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Smashing Pumpkins, and The Beatles, Daniel Romeo's songs tell stories of his travels, of love, loss, depression, and suicide. There is a real honesty to the lyrics that comes alive through Daniel’s raw vocal.

Dobby Rhyan Clapham is an Indigenous and Filipino hip hop musician, rapper and drummer under the rap pseudonym DOBBY. Rhyan aims to educate through music and bring Aboriginal culture and identity to the forefront

Particles are a two-piece rock outfit, formed in Sydney, Australia in 2016. Comprising of Dan D’Arcy and Skarlett Saramore. The band's sound is reminiscent of, and rooted in modern experimental modern rock, grunge and hard rock.

The Colour Orange: The Pauline Hanson Musical

Guess who's back? From the ashes of early 2000's Australian politics rises Senator Hanson - one woman, one party, One Nation. It's a pivotal time and Pauline has a big job ahead of her. Can she save our  country from imminent destruction? Meeting a kooky collection of Australian icons and has-beens along the way, watch as Pauline takes to the stage and tells a classic rags to riches to rags to riches to rags tale, and asks the question: What does it mean to be a hero?

Join the cast of The Colour Orange for an encore performance and a night of music and fun as we raise money to take Pauline on the road to the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
