Ben Abraham's Christmas Special

Hey everyone it's Ben Abraham - Australia's Indonesian Missy Higgins. I am thrilled to announce I am coming to play another surprise gig at Sydney's iconic (since August) venue The Newsagency.

For the last few years I have performed an annual Christmas gig in Melbourne but I have never brought it to Sydney! Thanks to the power of money and the internet this is about to change. I'll be playing a set of my own tunes, sprinkling in a few holiday songs and will hopefully be joined by a few guest performers. So what's say we get some pizzas and hang out together. Or you hang out. While I sing for you.

Merry Christmas.

Stella Donnelly w/ Ainsley Farrell & Antonia Susan

Fremantle resident, Bigsound highlight and inaugural winner of the Levis Music Prize STELLA DONNELLY is excited to announce a string of headline dates to round out an incredible 2017.

The tour will take in intimate venues in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Donnelly will also stop by Adelaide (for the boutique festival Porchland), Wollongong to support San Cisco, and was recently announced on Fairgrounds Festival.

At the beginning of 2017 Donnelly released her debut EP Thrush Metal soundcloud.com/healthy-tapes/sets/stella-donnelly-thrush-metal> and received critical acclaim and radio support from community radio and triple j. The five-track release (including the brilliant 'Mechanical Bull' and wrenching 'Boys Will Be Boys') was written over the space of two years; a musical undertaking resulting in a bold and unapologetic repertoire of songs which has propelled Donnelly to the forefront of the new guard of Australian songwriters.

Soon, Donnelly will head out on her first international journey, playing at The First Fifty (a pre-cursor event for The Great Escape) and next year's SXSW Conference.

Colleen O'Connell 'Sorrow, Longing and a Garden that Grows' Album Launch

Whimsical singer-songwriter Colleen O’Connell is returning to the forefront of the Sydney music scene with her new folk-pop infused 13-track album Sorrow, Longing and a Garden that Grows.

Recorded and arranged over the last year with deftness by local Sydney producer Michael Carpenter, the titles hints at the vulnerability and beauty expressed within the record. O’Connell has a sweet and expressive voice and brings freshness in her second solo album. From the bouncy Make Amends to the hauntingly beautiful melody of Boarding House, Sorrow, Longing and a Garden that Grows is an elegant treat.

With lyrics as the focus of O’Connell’s tunes, she carries on the folk tradition, whilst also striking a rare balance between fragility and full-blown possession in her delivery. Her performances are honest as they are captivating.

“The opening moments of Colleen O’Connell’s Burnt set the scene for a beautifully crafted journey, punctuated by honest and poignant lyrics. The captivating simplicity of the opening lyric against a sparse piano accompaniment provides all the opportunity for the song to grow and build, one that O’Connell and her production team did not let slip by... Her vocal delivery is charming. Her beautiful tone combined with the moments her Australian accent creeps in makes the delivery seem at once polished, sensitive and natural.”

Having already released three albums as a jazz performer under her own name in Australia and Japan, Briana is spreading her wings a songwriter, arranger and performer. The new sound is a result of a collaboration with producer and London native Harry Tarlton (Kobalt Music Group, Chi) and draws sonic flavours from the likes of Tom Misch, Lianne La Havas, Mura Masa, Little Dragon, Laura Mvula and Oh Pep!

PHIA: The Woman Who Counted The Stars Tour 2017

PHIA: The Woman Who Counted The Stars Tour 2017

Live-looping, indie-pop phenomenon Phia is touring her new EP The Woman Who Counted the Stars around the country in November and December.

The five tracks are brimming with layers of glitter and grit, and herald the arrival of a bold new sound for the Melbourne-born singer-songwriter.

Pulsing, distorted drums and intergalactic juno synths collide with fuzz guitar and vintage casio keyboards, as Phia’s longtime production collaborator Joshua Teicher realizes a sonic vision that manages to be both lush, raw, and emotionally affecting. Phia’s effortlessly charismatic, crystal-clear vocal soars.

Taking inspiration from the lives of female pioneers of science and enterprise, Phia began writing over the Melbourne summer, looking outwards as much as inwards for inspiration.

What eventuated is Phia’s most definitive work to date, with the songs weaving their way masterfully from caves under the Earth right up into the cosmos.

The Old Married Couple presents: 'Welcome to the Music Hall' - Vaudeville Variety Music Hall Show

Step right up to Sydney's one and only The Newsagency to be taken back in time with The Old Married Couple and A Couple More as they release their album 'Welcome to The Music Hall' with a huge Vaudeville celebration. The band will be joined with a vaudeville variety lineup including Drag Queen Amanda Vided and Burlesque performer Rosie Rivette and more TBA.
Settle in for an assault on the senses as you laugh, cry and cringe in this Vaudeville Variety Music Hall Show.

The Old Married Couple
THE OLD MARRIED COUPLE are the faces of new vintage, playing Dixieland style music with a vaudevillian twist that would be at home as much in the Music Halls of the 19th century as they are in the 21st century. Riley and Katie are young married pair in their 20’s but they’re vintage in style and sound. The Old Married Couple combine a witty songwriting style with a distinctive kazoo and fun infused sound that takes influences from Dixieland, skiffle, swing and music hall and presents it all with a vaudevillian tongue planted firmly in cheek.

“If you didn’t know any better, you may think The Old Married Couple were plucked from the 1920s Jazz/Vaudeville crowd, transported to the 1960s Folk/Country/Blues scene and finally made their way to the early 21st Century Indie Music arena. Perhaps they have settled down somewhere within the same city limits as Pokey Lafarge and The Ditty Bops while listening to Cole Porter on the gramophone – Adam Selzer

Rosie Rivette

Rosie Rivette is vintage inspired comedienne, heavily influenced by the Queens of quirk such as Lucille Ball and Dame Edna Everage. Miss Rivette is predominantly known for her animated and comedic style of tease, she loves to build a fantasy, and when you least expect it, she'll punch it where it hurts! So hold onto your gonads folks, and get ready for eroticism in its most confusing form yet!

Amanda Vided

After winning her debut competition, this weird and wonderful queen has gone from strength to strength. From starring in the 'Rocky Horror Drag Show' to performing for the infamous ChiChi LaRue, is very much on the rise to sydney stardom. The weird, wonderful queen will be bringing her personal brand of entertainment to you

Don't delay, buy your tickets right now to this amazing event before it sells out and you're forced to sit at home crying in your porridge with your cat judging you.

Widow's Walk // Georgia State Line // Nick Payne & The Wanted Few

Widow’s Walk have just released Blood & Water. This second EP for Widow’s Walk demonstrates an increasingly complex approach to genre and instrumentation, and explores the tensions that exist between loss, fear, birth and spirituality.

Widow’s Walk will team up with, Melbourne based band,  Georgia State Line who are en route to Dashville Skyline and Inner West locals,  Nick Payne & the Wanted Few to bring you a night of country-tinged, blues-laced, folk-inspired music.

Georgia State Line are an alt-country collective hailing from various parts of small town Australia. Lead singer-songwriter, Georgia Delves cites taking her inspiration from the classics of Linda Ronstandt and current exponents within the Nashville singer-songwriter scene, centring her writing on the bittersweet balancing act between growing up and staying young. Since arriving on the scene not so long ago, the group have enjoyed notable performances alongside Australian country music icon, Bill Chambers at the Tamworth Country Music Festival 2017 and has garnered nods from Paul Gough (ABC Radio National).

Most recently their latest offering, debut EP ‘Heaven Knows’ saw a warm reception for the clan, quickly labelling them as “one of Australia’s best up-and-coming” acts. (Art News Portal)
