The Twoks with special guest, Logos

Xani Kolac (violin/vocals) and Mark Leahy (drums) from The Twoks have broken up.

The Twoks are a duo with an undeniable on-stage chemistry. That happens when you get up to have muesli together every morning and argue about whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher. But by the end of 2015, Xani and Mark decided to call it quits. The Twoks would go on, but their romantic relationship was over.

It is now 2017. Mark looks much better and Xani doesn’t bite her fingernails quite as much. Despite all the tinder dating, the awkward banter and the tears cried, The Twoks are more back together than ever before. The future is bright and the music is brighter.

The Twoks have spent the past twelve months working together on their much-awaited new EP featuring four tracks written post-split. The songs are deeply personal, but written collaboratively. You might even say it’s a bit awkward.

From the debris of a crumbling relationship, The Twoks 2.0 emerged. With an East Coast tour up ahead, new music and a new show, audiences can expect ABBA covers, awkward stories and that special glow every one gets when they’re newly single.

The Twoks tour their new single, “Let It Break” from their forthcoming EP throughout August.

September 1st, The Newsagency, Annandale

SPRING MIXTAPE

Hey there,

I thought I’d make you a mixtape of my favourite bands – you know how people used to do that? I don’t know if you know, but it means that I kind of like you. Anyway, this is what I’ve been listening to recently. They are all Sydney artists, maybe you’ve heard of them? If not I think you’re really going to dig them. And what’s more they are all playing at The Newsagency on Sep 9. It’s a cool venue that just reopened and I’d love to go with you. If that’s something you would be into? I hope you like the tape.

SPARROWS is the Indie Pop project of Jessica Nitties, who records and produces all of the music from found sounds to analog synths from her bedroom studio in Sydney. An eclectic mix of electronic and acoustic textures, her songs are delicately-crafted sonic stories. With diverse influences from The Knife to Brian Wilson, Sparrows loves to play with sound and narrative. Fuelled by material from dreams, eavesdropped sounds to graffiti of public toilet doors, she works to weave these ideas into her pop gems.

DEEPSEA LIGHTS are Sydney trip hop duo dipping their toes (and sometimes plunging their heads) into anything that inspires them. Lying somewhere between folk and trip-hop, their unique sound can move from rolling bass lines and ethereal vocal melodies, to beats composed entirely of household objects being struck with other household objects, to aggressive hip-hop rants, to soft rainy day folk songs. Stitching their inspirations together like a sonic patchwork quilt, they'll use whatever they can get their hands on in an effort to get things out of their heads and into the world.

PATCHES is a plunder-phonic beat maker that transports you to new realms. Creating enveloping soundscapes with his modular synth, and live sets that are a genre and mind bending experience.
Patches is a multimedia artist, composing for films and video games as well as creative programming for interactive performances and installations.

SILENT TOWNS is a collaborative project led by poet Peter Roads and musician Alicia May. They make the heart sing and the soul soar with words and sounds.

Carpenter Caswell (Album Launch) + The Weeping Willows

Carpenter Caswell, are a new duo, but in name only.  Allan Caswell is an Australian artist that needs no introduction. Arguably Australia’s most recorded songwriter in any genre, his career spans over 4 decades in the country music world. As an artist his much celebrated career continues to evolve, including this collaboration with Michael Carpenter. Carpenter himself is no stranger to the Australian music scene. A singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer-engineer with well over 3 decades of involvement in the industry, he’s no slouch in the experience department. Together they’ve created the duo’s debut album, being launched at The Newsagency. The album showcases the duo’s unique interpretation of ‘Austracana’ - Australian Alternative Country music. With everything from classic old school country sounds, to bluegrass, to folk, to straight down the line country rock, the album (including 3 top ten singles), and the show they’ve put together to showcase it, takes the audience on a trip through the creative minds of 2 great Australian songwriters, and the way they see the world after a few years of being in it!

The Weeping Willows are a wonderful Melbourne based duo that are going from strength to strength.  Drawing on folk, bluegrass and country music, combined with great songwriting and a unique combination of the voices of Laura Coates and An drew Wrigglesworth, the band celebrated their first Golden Guitar nominations this year for their album “Before Darkness Comes A-Callin’”. Their always captivating videos from the album have seen them become a staple on the Country Music Channel, and a rigorous touring schedule around the country over the last 18 months has seen their live show evolve into a potent display of contemporary Alternative Country.

This show promises to be one of the highlights of the Sydney Alternative Country calendar, with 2 acts at the top of their game, showcasing great music from their newest albums.  A show not to be missed!

The Old Married Couple presents: 'Welcome to the Music Hall' - Vaudeville Variety Music Hall Show

Step right up to Sydney's one and only The Newsagency to be taken back in time with The Old Married Couple and A Couple More as they release their album 'Welcome to The Music Hall' with a huge Vaudeville celebration. The band will be joined with a vaudeville variety lineup including Drag Queen Amanda Vided and Burlesque performer Rosie Rivette and more TBA.
Settle in for an assault on the senses as you laugh, cry and cringe in this Vaudeville Variety Music Hall Show.

The Old Married Couple
THE OLD MARRIED COUPLE are the faces of new vintage, playing Dixieland style music with a vaudevillian twist that would be at home as much in the Music Halls of the 19th century as they are in the 21st century. Riley and Katie are young married pair in their 20’s but they’re vintage in style and sound. The Old Married Couple combine a witty songwriting style with a distinctive kazoo and fun infused sound that takes influences from Dixieland, skiffle, swing and music hall and presents it all with a vaudevillian tongue planted firmly in cheek.

“If you didn’t know any better, you may think The Old Married Couple were plucked from the 1920s Jazz/Vaudeville crowd, transported to the 1960s Folk/Country/Blues scene and finally made their way to the early 21st Century Indie Music arena. Perhaps they have settled down somewhere within the same city limits as Pokey Lafarge and The Ditty Bops while listening to Cole Porter on the gramophone – Adam Selzer

Rosie Rivette

Rosie Rivette is vintage inspired comedienne, heavily influenced by the Queens of quirk such as Lucille Ball and Dame Edna Everage. Miss Rivette is predominantly known for her animated and comedic style of tease, she loves to build a fantasy, and when you least expect it, she'll punch it where it hurts! So hold onto your gonads folks, and get ready for eroticism in its most confusing form yet!

Amanda Vided

After winning her debut competition, this weird and wonderful queen has gone from strength to strength. From starring in the 'Rocky Horror Drag Show' to performing for the infamous ChiChi LaRue, is very much on the rise to sydney stardom. The weird, wonderful queen will be bringing her personal brand of entertainment to you

Don't delay, buy your tickets right now to this amazing event before it sells out and you're forced to sit at home crying in your porridge with your cat judging you.

Taryn La Fauci 'Cycling' Album Launch w/ Gentle Leader

With most childhood summer holidays spent wandering between cane paddocks, meandering along the sandy shorelines in Tully and Mission Beach in Far North Queensland or having her head buried deeply within a book, Taryn has always been drawn to introspection. From those small country town holidays to travelling the world, Sydney became her home 5 years ago and it is here that singing and writing turned from having always been a way to process her experiences internally to performing them for intimate audiences on stage.

As her travelling has expanded her, so have those stories shaped her writing and no more than her debut album “Cycling”.

I crafted every idea with a purpose and idea behind it. This record is where I am as an artist and songwriter and I am very proud of this album and more confident with it than the first EP.”
–
Taryn La Fauci

The album is following the independent release of her EP UNVIEL, and will be filled with personally sensitive lyrics that are assured to leave a moving effect on listeners and critics alike. Funded through the crowd funding platform Pozible, CYCLING was beautifully crafted by producer Ryan K Brennan (Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes) and Andrew Edgeson (Matt Corby, Bloods) in Sydney’s 301 Studios.

To create the album, La Fauci ensured she was present for all studio sessions and instrumentation, playing all the featured guitars and writing all 10 tracks herself. Written through a time of disbelief, sadness and hope, her words carved space and light into the shadows of experiences no-one is free from meeting, even when you may not ready to face them.

“Last week Sydney based singer-songwriter Taryn La Fauci released the gorgeous new video for her single “Life of Song”. The track perfectly showcases La Fauci’s powerful lyrics and stripped back, acoustic accompaniment.”

— TIMBER AND STEEL

“La Fauci’s voice is lilting and lush, particularly when paired with arrangements of strings, percussion and slide guitar.””

 THE BRAG

“Taryn’s lyrics may at first seem rather personal and inward-looking, but closer attention will invariably yield the realisation that the situations and stances reflect the listener’s own experiences just as much.”

— DAVID KIDMAN, FATEA UK

Join Taryn for a night of intimate music to launch her Debut Album 'Cycling' at the newly re-opened Newsagency.

Owned and run by Singer-Songwriter Alison Avron, this highly regarded venue was first opened in Marickville in 2011 and has been host to incredible artists such as Lanie Lane, Abby Dobson and Marlon Williams.

Reviews praised the CD for its variety, recalling the Early 80's Indie Pop scene. Compared it favourably with Custard and Make it Shine, the song value lies in the catchy hooks and layered lyrical insights. In 2014 the new EP, Little Secrets was released and has found a wider audience in Russia and US with the CD getting regular airplay.

PASCOE is an Australian singer-songwriter based in Sydney. Her self released debut EP, ‘The Girl with No Hands’, is a brooding blend of folk and pop as she derives the raw depth of her songs from the stories of ruined women throughout literature and history. Her honesty for the darkness and beauty of the human mind is woven flawlessly into her sound. From stripped back and hollow rhythmic riffs with powerful subtext and vocals, to the strong pulse of synth in her single Lorelei, her music will immerse you in tales of murky textures and the torturous intricacies of a woman slowly losing her mind.

Chelsea Reed (Direct from Canada) w/ Danielle Deckard & Blind Hot Gems

Aussie transplant Chelsea Reed proves that evocative lyrics and accessible melodies transcend borders as her formative experiences in Newcastle, Australia now infuse the musical brew she is creating in Toronto, her new home. This triple threat (singer, songwriter, pianist) is preparing to launch her first full-length recording, recorded with the guidance of respected Canadian producer, Dave Draves (Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson) in spring 2017. The album takes the listener through the psyche of this self deprecating but playful twenty-something, exploring the universal themes of connection and purpose through a unique lens, with songs written by Chelsea herself, along with co-writes with some of Toronto’s sought after songwriting veterans.

Piano and voice lessons drew her attention as an early teen, and although she has never really learned how to read music, that didn’t stop her from discovering a gift for songwriting after a jazz composition ended up accidentally becoming a pop song. Her first band was a soul/funk ensemble and she wrote a number of songs in that vein, and then went on to earn her stripes in every kind of cover band, playing pubs, weddings and festivals, singing everything from Billie Holliday to AC/DC.

Her wide-ranging understanding of music made her a natural choice to compose music for two critically acclaimed theatrical productions in Sydney.

Chelsea initially demonstrated her distinctive songwriting with her original fusionof smart folk sensibilities and indie radio pop in two critically acclaimed singles released in Australia, where she was a fixture in Sydney’s vibrant live music scene. Those lucky enough to catch one of her live performances in Toronto’s singer/songwriter venues are captivated by the full-bodied clarity of her velvety voice, and a Canadian tour this summer will allow music lovers from coast to coast to experience this exciting talent and call her Canada’s own.

Brendon Moon is an indie, and ambient, singer-songwriter hailing from Sydney's inner west. Having launched into the scene with a sound like no other, Moon's ability to conjure dream like states through his wondrous voice and lush guitar tones has garnered him a reputation for incredible performances that keep audiences coming back. Having already toured Australia's east coast, as a solo artist, alongside Georgia Mulligan, Moon is now on the rise again; putting together a world class band of like minds to expand upon his, already expansive, songs.

"Moon has one of those voices that is just so captivating...' Timber & Steel

"Moon's lush, meandering guitar work and ethereal dreamlike vocal melodies create something greater than the sum of it's parts.. a mixture of Jose Gonzalez and Sigur Ros, whilst retaining his own unique sound. His music will have you drifting off into a dream in no time at all." Joshua McBeath, HAZEY

Elizabeth Hughes

In March 2016, Happy Magazine named Elizabeth as one of Australia's 20 guitarists to watch, alongside Stu Mackenzie (King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard) and Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote). She has supported Julien Baker, Kaki King, Julia Jacklin, Bec Sandridge and Holly Throsby and she is the guitarist in Sydney indie band Phantastic Ferniture.

Hazel English

Inertia Music and Collective Artists are pleased to present Australian native and Californian resident Hazel English's debut Australian shows this January, 2017. After a meteoric rise through the blogosphere with the support of trailblazing champions Gorilla vs Bear, Stereogum and The Line Of Best Fit and having reached an accumulative three million streams+ online, the world is catching onto Hazel’s beautifully blurry indie-pop aesthetic.

Watch ‘Make It Better’ here: https://youtu.be/nFDxcfwGjk0

Growing up in Sydney and spending time in Melbourne before relocating to newly adopted home in Oakland CA, the 25-year-old’s music reflects this movement in her life - she describes her sound as “transportive; it makes you feel like you’re in a different place”. Musically, she's drawn comparisons to fellow dream-pop crafters from Alvvays, Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and touring partners Ride, while her hypnotic vocal arrangements have been likened to everyone from Grimes to DIIV.

Having released five tracks in little over two months - packaged as the Never Going Home EP - Hazel’s songs are are charming, bittersweet, deeply personal yet very relatable, and have already earned her an impressive string of accolades. “Make It Better” premiered via Stereogum, who labelled her one of their 40 Best Bands of 2016, and has since been added to spot rotation on triple j. “Never Going Home” and “It’s Not Real” were first premiered in demo-form via her Soundcloud and have since clocked up over a million listens between them, making her something of an online sensation before she was even signed. “Control” was given Annie Mac’s seal of approval via a ‘New Name’ feature on BBC Radio 1. “I’m Fine” charted at #1 on Hype Machine upon release.

Hazel is an artist for whom the visuals and music go hand in hand - meticulously clad head-to-toe in a seemingly endless supply of op-shop finds, a glance at any of Hazel’s social networks reveals a vivid portal into her timeless world where sun-bleached snaps bely a million possible stories. Having spent 2016 writing, recording and touring extensively in the US, get to know Hazel English ahead of new music early 2017.

Alex The Astronaut + Guests

Sydney-via-New York singer and guitarist ALEX THE ASTRONAUT is psyched to announce ‘Already Home’, her observant and heart-warming new single as added to

high rotation on radio triple j. ‘Already Home’ is taken from her forthcoming EP and follows ‘Holes in the Story’ and the eclectic ‘Half of 21st Street’, and will be released
on all platforms via Minkowski Records on Friday November 18.

‘Already Home’ was produced by Benjamin McCarthy (Kate Miller-Heidke, Gordi, Nyck) and recorded in Melbourne earlier this year. While she spends most of her year playing
soccer and studying maths and physics in New York, Alex the Astronaut was in Australia over her term break to see her friends and family and to save money for recording and the
year ahead. She found herself working multiple jobs and the pressures of her schedule – which included coaching athletics, tutoring high-schoolers, working in a café, being a nanny and
playing music at restaurants – started to become too overwhelming as it just wasn’t sustainable. Alex the Astronaut explains: “I was people watching on the bus home from one of my jobs
and realized how many people experience this out of control feeling for the majority of their lives. It actually made me feel better to think of how much people do just so they can come
home to someone they care about and so they can have something to eat and somewhere to sleep.”

Less than a year since she started releasing music, Alex the Astronaut has been touted a Global Newcomer on Acid Stag, spotlight artist on AAA Backstage, best new music on Indie
Underground amongst other media acclaim, with Richard Kingsmill noting on her last single ‘Holes in the Story’ “I like how this is both naïve and worldy at once. A real charmer
of a song,” and UK’s Drunken Werewolf calling her last single “a great piece of modern story telling.” Her eclectic debut single ‘Half of 21st Street’ was called a “bold, brave first
offering” (Dom Alessio, triple j) with Something You Said saying that Alex is “a folktronic delight.”

‘Already Home’ is out now, and is taken from her forthcoming EP due out Jan 2017. The EP will be released on Alex The Astronaut’s own label, Minkowski
Records (a way of graphing events which shows that it doesn’t really matter how events happen, just where they get to in the end) with distribution via Kobalt.
In the meantime, make sure to catch Alex The Astronaut on her return live shows in Sydney & Melbourne. Limited tickets available. Details

Alister Turrill w/ Kieran Morris

“Alister is a songwriter of the highest order and a sign that the future of Australian blues is in good hands.” - Lloyd Spiegel, Premier Endorsee Cole Clark Guitars.

It would be a generalisation to group 24 year old Alister Turrill with other young roots players. His playing style blends a true form of blues with complex song writing seldom seen in someone so young.

Alister won the 2011 Melbourne Youth in Blues award and as a result has been taking guidance from Australia’s most respected blues artists. He’s shared the stage with Jeff Lang, Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel on several occasions and has supported the likes of Charlie Parr (US), Ash Grunwald, Kim Churchill, Steve Smyth, Tim Freedman and Shane Howard.

Following his award winning 2013 debut album 'Reverence & Reverence', and 2015 single release 'Road To The Grave' comes the brand new EP 'A Toast To Better Times'.

A stripped-back modern folk/country blues record where the quality of his songwriting is bared for all. On the back of this release, Alister will be playing his way up the East Coast of Australia for the first time. His first show at The Newsagency, Marrickville is on 27th November with support from Kieran Morris.

Tim Hulsman "Monster" Single Launch w/ Cameron James Henderson

Slide guitarist and soulful singer/songwriter Tim Hulsman is fresh and memorable. He wields his slide guitar with brutish soul and delicate finesse, sharing his heart-wrenching story with startling openness and naked emotion.

With a hard won, debut position of No.18 on the Australian Blues & Roots Airplay Charts in July 2014, Hulsman’s last release “Dead Man’s Garden” received fountains of praise and loads of airplay, increasing public awareness of his unique but classic feeling, song-writing style.

Late last year Tim was awarded the Inaugural Alex Legg Memorial Foundation Scholarship 2015 -16, for excellence in songwriting, stagecraft and artistic vision.

His latest album "Get Loved" is a melting pot of his favourite music influences distilled into a distinctive sound and style of his own, with complex melodies, emotive lyrics, beautifully dynamic sounds and a unique roots/pop sensibility. It's due for release early in 2017.

Tim is touring now to promote the first single "Monster" from the new album, and is encouraging all concert attendees to think about what brings the monster out in them...and dress to show it! That's right, a night to celebrate our dark side, to speak openly about the human weaknesses and imperfection that make us all so beautifully unique and mysterious.

At The Newsagency on Saturday November 26th with support from the wonderful Cameron James Henderson, a night of humour, honesty, depth and emotion to send you home feeling freer and lighter.

Ben Mitchell (MELB)

Melbourne based singer-songwriter Ben Mitchell is a genre-crossing troubadour, writing and performing indie-folk/indie-pop-rock and alt-country-blues. Time Out UK compared his ‘songsmithery’ to Neil Finn and Ben Harper describing Mitchell as ‘a thoughtful songwriter with a gift for simple melodies and powerful emotion.’

Each of the 31 tracks on Mitchell’s two albums, Chance To Love (2015), and Summer Lover (2016) received radio play across Australia, with spins in UK and Ireland too. London’s Get Rhythm Magazine wrote Mitchell is, “A powerful performer with bags of stage presence and memorable songs.” Americana UK said “His song-writing skills put him in a league above.”

In June this year, Mitchell achieved his first Number 1 on the AMRAP Regional Chart. Current album, Summer Lover is getting glowing reviews including being described as. “…the perfect antidote to the long winter months. It will warm your soul and brighten your mood,” Myles O’Neill Shaw (PBS FM) and, “Another fine release and collection of songs from Ben that showcases his development as one of Melbourne’s emerging singer/songwriters,” Neil Rogers (3RRR).

Jessica O'Donoghue w/ Pheno

JESSICA O’DONOGHUE

“A mercurial talent, Jessica has created songs with real depth. Listening to the album is a full-bodied experience: theatrical and intimate, operatic and haunting, raw and urgent, at once dark and contemplative and inspiring. It’s pop music with a difference.” – Ashleigh Wilson (Arts Editor at The Australian)

“Hypnotic, powerful and haunting. The vocals remind me of Sarah Blasko, soaring with an unrestrained strength. The production has so much depth, and a uniquely raw edge that keeps me completely captivated. It’s safe to say that I’m a fan.” – Delia Bartle (Indie Shuffle)

More than a decade has passed since Jessica turned her back on an opera career to pursue eclectic musical experiences bound only by imagination. Her projects ranged from pop music, particularly with the Sydney band CODA, to jazz, cabaret, musical theatre, Renaissance music and (yes) contemporary opera. Her many collaborators include Nick Wales, Jane Tyrell, Jared Underwood, Bree Van Reyk and Alyx Dennison. She has performed in festivals and venues around the world including VIVID Festival, Sydney Festival (Opera House), Adelaide Festival (Adelaide Festival Centre), Melbourne International Arts Festival (Malthouse), Movimentos Festival (Wolfsburg), Georgetown Festival (Penang), and multiple festivals around Europe (Luxembourg, Stockholm, Ludwigsburg and Ludwigshafen) while continuing to pursue fresh ways to tell stories through music.

Jessica’s creative ambitions have culminated in her debut EP Emerge, a remarkable statement of intent from a singer confident in her own sound. It was recorded and produced in Sydney by Neal Sutherland, an ARIA-award winning artist who has worked closely with the likes of Bertie Blackman, Jack Ladder, Sarah Blasko, Megan Washington, Josh Pyke, Julian Hamilton (Presets) and Sophie Lowe.

Jessica released her first single from the album ‘Parachute’ in September and will be celebrating with a single launch at The Newsagency on Saturday 19th November, performing with Neal Sutherland and special guest Pheno (Jess Green). Doors open at 8:00pm, 8:30pm – Pheno, 9:30pm – Jessica O’Donoghue.
