Colleen O'Connell 'Sorrow, Longing and a Garden that Grows' Album Launch

Whimsical singer-songwriter Colleen O’Connell is returning to the forefront of the Sydney music scene with her new folk-pop infused 13-track album Sorrow, Longing and a Garden that Grows.

Recorded and arranged over the last year with deftness by local Sydney producer Michael Carpenter, the titles hints at the vulnerability and beauty expressed within the record. O’Connell has a sweet and expressive voice and brings freshness in her second solo album. From the bouncy Make Amends to the hauntingly beautiful melody of Boarding House, Sorrow, Longing and a Garden that Grows is an elegant treat.

With lyrics as the focus of O’Connell’s tunes, she carries on the folk tradition, whilst also striking a rare balance between fragility and full-blown possession in her delivery. Her performances are honest as they are captivating.

“The opening moments of Colleen O’Connell’s Burnt set the scene for a beautifully crafted journey, punctuated by honest and poignant lyrics. The captivating simplicity of the opening lyric against a sparse piano accompaniment provides all the opportunity for the song to grow and build, one that O’Connell and her production team did not let slip by... Her vocal delivery is charming. Her beautiful tone combined with the moments her Australian accent creeps in makes the delivery seem at once polished, sensitive and natural.”

PHIA: The Woman Who Counted The Stars Tour 2017

Live-looping, indie-pop phenomenon Phia is touring her new EP The Woman Who Counted the Stars around the country in November and December.

The five tracks are brimming with layers of glitter and grit, and herald the arrival of a bold new sound for the Melbourne-born singer-songwriter.

Pulsing, distorted drums and intergalactic juno synths collide with fuzz guitar and vintage casio keyboards, as Phia’s longtime production collaborator Joshua Teicher realizes a sonic vision that manages to be both lush, raw, and emotionally affecting. Phia’s effortlessly charismatic, crystal-clear vocal soars.

Taking inspiration from the lives of female pioneers of science and enterprise, Phia began writing over the Melbourne summer, looking outwards as much as inwards for inspiration.

What eventuated is Phia’s most definitive work to date, with the songs weaving their way masterfully from caves under the Earth right up into the cosmos.

Phia is touring in Germany and the U.K in September and October before returning home to share her new music live around the country.

The Old Married Couple presents: 'Welcome to the Music Hall' - Vaudeville Variety Music Hall Show

Step right up to Sydney's one and only The Newsagency to be taken back in time with The Old Married Couple and A Couple More as they release their album 'Welcome to The Music Hall' with a huge Vaudeville celebration. The band will be joined with a vaudeville variety lineup including Drag Queen Amanda Vided and Burlesque performer Rosie Rivette and more TBA.
Settle in for an assault on the senses as you laugh, cry and cringe in this Vaudeville Variety Music Hall Show.

The Old Married Couple
THE OLD MARRIED COUPLE are the faces of new vintage, playing Dixieland style music with a vaudevillian twist that would be at home as much in the Music Halls of the 19th century as they are in the 21st century. Riley and Katie are young married pair in their 20’s but they’re vintage in style and sound. The Old Married Couple combine a witty songwriting style with a distinctive kazoo and fun infused sound that takes influences from Dixieland, skiffle, swing and music hall and presents it all with a vaudevillian tongue planted firmly in cheek.

“If you didn’t know any better, you may think The Old Married Couple were plucked from the 1920s Jazz/Vaudeville crowd, transported to the 1960s Folk/Country/Blues scene and finally made their way to the early 21st Century Indie Music arena. Perhaps they have settled down somewhere within the same city limits as Pokey Lafarge and The Ditty Bops while listening to Cole Porter on the gramophone – Adam Selzer

Rosie Rivette

Rosie Rivette is vintage inspired comedienne, heavily influenced by the Queens of quirk such as Lucille Ball and Dame Edna Everage. Miss Rivette is predominantly known for her animated and comedic style of tease, she loves to build a fantasy, and when you least expect it, she'll punch it where it hurts! So hold onto your gonads folks, and get ready for eroticism in its most confusing form yet!

Amanda Vided

After winning her debut competition, this weird and wonderful queen has gone from strength to strength. From starring in the 'Rocky Horror Drag Show' to performing for the infamous ChiChi LaRue, is very much on the rise to sydney stardom. The weird, wonderful queen will be bringing her personal brand of entertainment to you

Stephanie Cherote + Christine Jane + Daniel Cherote

“Down from the chambers of my confiscated rage, there is a voice that tremors like a heart inside a cage….”

Sheltering a deep connection between lyric and melody, Stephanie Cherote shepherds your ear into a secreted layer of insight. Her elegant wit unleashes through cinematic storytelling and the commanding gravity of her voice, a wildfire of nostalgic inflections and womanly echoes of Lee Hazlewood & Leonard Cohen.

Stephanie has spent the last few years living in New York City and wandering far and wide penning her debut album. She is currently in the studio bringing these nomadic tales to life with an acoustic guitar and a twelve-piece orchestra, due to be released January 2018.

SPRING MIXTAPE

Hey there,

I thought I’d make you a mixtape of my favourite bands – you know how people used to do that? I don’t know if you know, but it means that I kind of like you. Anyway, this is what I’ve been listening to recently. They are all Sydney artists, maybe you’ve heard of them? If not I think you’re really going to dig them. And what’s more they are all playing at The Newsagency on Sep 9. It’s a cool venue that just reopened and I’d love to go with you. If that’s something you would be into? I hope you like the tape.

SPARROWS is the Indie Pop project of Jessica Nitties, who records and produces all of the music from found sounds to analog synths from her bedroom studio in Sydney. An eclectic mix of electronic and acoustic textures, her songs are delicately-crafted sonic stories. With diverse influences from The Knife to Brian Wilson, Sparrows loves to play with sound and narrative. Fuelled by material from dreams, eavesdropped sounds to graffiti of public toilet doors, she works to weave these ideas into her pop gems.

DEEPSEA LIGHTS are Sydney trip hop duo dipping their toes (and sometimes plunging their heads) into anything that inspires them. Lying somewhere between folk and trip-hop, their unique sound can move from rolling bass lines and ethereal vocal melodies, to beats composed entirely of household objects being struck with other household objects, to aggressive hip-hop rants, to soft rainy day folk songs. Stitching their inspirations together like a sonic patchwork quilt, they'll use whatever they can get their hands on in an effort to get things out of their heads and into the world.

PATCHES is a plunder-phonic beat maker that transports you to new realms. Creating enveloping soundscapes with his modular synth, and live sets that are a genre and mind bending experience.
Patches is a multimedia artist, composing for films and video games as well as creative programming for interactive performances and installations.

SILENT TOWNS is a collaborative project led by poet Peter Roads and musician Alicia May. They make the heart sing and the soul soar with words and sounds.

The Twoks with special guest, Logos

Xani Kolac (violin/vocals) and Mark Leahy (drums) from The Twoks have broken up.

The Twoks are a duo with an undeniable on-stage chemistry. That happens when you get up to have muesli together every morning and argue about whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher. But by the end of 2015, Xani and Mark decided to call it quits. The Twoks would go on, but their romantic relationship was over.

It is now 2017. Mark looks much better and Xani doesn’t bite her fingernails quite as much. Despite all the tinder dating, the awkward banter and the tears cried, The Twoks are more back together than ever before. The future is bright and the music is brighter.

The Twoks have spent the past twelve months working together on their much-awaited new EP featuring four tracks written post-split. The songs are deeply personal, but written collaboratively. You might even say it’s a bit awkward.

From the debris of a crumbling relationship, The Twoks 2.0 emerged. With an East Coast tour up ahead, new music and a new show, audiences can expect ABBA covers, awkward stories and that special glow every one gets when they’re newly single.

The Twoks tour their new single, “Let It Break” from their forthcoming EP throughout August.

September 1st, The Newsagency, Annandale

Taryn La Fauci 'Cycling' Album Launch w/ Gentle Leader

Taryn La Fauci 'Cycling' Album Launch w/ Gentle Leader

With most childhood summer holidays spent wandering between cane paddocks, meandering along the sandy shorelines in Tully and Mission Beach in Far North Queensland or having her head buried deeply within a book, Taryn has always been drawn to introspection. From those small country town holidays to travelling the world, Sydney became her home 5 years ago and it is here that singing and writing turned from having always been a way to process her experiences internally to performing them for intimate audiences on stage.

As her travelling has expanded her, so have those stories shaped her writing and no more than her debut album “Cycling”.

I crafted every idea with a purpose and idea behind it. This record is where I am as an artist and songwriter and I am very proud of this album and more confident with it than the first EP.”
–
Taryn La Fauci

The album is following the independent release of her EP UNVIEL, and will be filled with personally sensitive lyrics that are assured to leave a moving effect on listeners and critics alike. Funded through the crowd funding platform Pozible, CYCLING was beautifully crafted by producer Ryan K Brennan (Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes) and Andrew Edgeson (Matt Corby, Bloods) in Sydney’s 301 Studios.

To create the album, La Fauci ensured she was present for all studio sessions and instrumentation, playing all the featured guitars and writing all 10 tracks herself. Written through a time of disbelief, sadness and hope, her words carved space and light into the shadows of experiences no-one is free from meeting, even when you may not ready to face them.

“Last week Sydney based singer-songwriter Taryn La Fauci released the gorgeous new video for her single “Life of Song”. The track perfectly showcases La Fauci’s powerful lyrics and stripped back, acoustic accompaniment.”

— TIMBER AND STEEL

“La Fauci’s voice is lilting and lush, particularly when paired with arrangements of strings, percussion and slide guitar.””

 THE BRAG

“Taryn’s lyrics may at first seem rather personal and inward-looking, but closer attention will invariably yield the realisation that the situations and stances reflect the listener’s own experiences just as much.”

— DAVID KIDMAN, FATEA UK

Join Taryn for a night of intimate music to launch her Debut Album 'Cycling' at the newly re-opened Newsagency.

Owned and run by Singer-Songwriter Alison Avron, this highly regarded venue was first opened in Marickville in 2011 and has been host to incredible artists such as Lanie Lane, Abby Dobson and Marlon Williams.

L.J.Phillips is a songwriter that performs regularly in around Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and Inner West.
In 2012 he released his first EP , 11pm Friday Night. It featured the popular single , You got me thinkin' and its follow up, I Cant Wait.
Reviews praised the CD for its variety, recalling the Early 80's Indie Pop scene. Compared it favourably with Custard and Make it Shine, the song value lies in the catchy hooks and layered lyrical insights. In 2014 the new EP, Little Secrets was released and has found a wider audience in Russia and US with the CD getting regular airplay.

PASCOE EP Launch w/ Matt Gold

PASCOE is an Australian singer-songwriter based in Sydney. Her self released debut EP, ‘The Girl with No Hands’, is a brooding blend of folk and pop as she derives the raw depth of her songs from the stories of ruined women throughout literature and history. Her honesty for the darkness and beauty of the human mind is woven flawlessly into her sound. From stripped back and hollow rhythmic riffs with powerful subtext and vocals, to the strong pulse of synth in her single Lorelei, her music will immerse you in tales of murky textures and the torturous intricacies of a woman slowly losing her mind.
