Adult Glee Club Open House Sing a-Long

IMG_3726 - Adult Glee Club.JPG

ADULT GLEE CLUB presents our first ever

OPEN HOUSE SING-A-LONG 4 EVERYONE AND ANYONE

Did you know? Singing daily for at least 10 minutes reduces stress, clears sinuses, improves posture and can help you live longer. Sounds crazy right, but it's the TRUTH!

Adult Glee Club has been running a variety of local Glee Clubs across Australia and each week we bring people together to learn how to sing as a group. It's life changing and a lot of FUN.

BUT... we thought it was time to enhance that FUN and EXCITEMENT by hosting our first ever Open House Sing-a-long where anyone and everyone can come along for a good sing.

If you haven't taken up singing with others or if you're looking to just see what singing with others is like, then you should get yourself along to this event. It's an opportunity for you to get personal with your vocal chords and to perk your ears to the beautiful sound of harmonious singing.

We're limited to only 100 tickets and the opportunity to belt out a tune in harmony and gusto with such a large group, doesn't come around so often.

Lead by the amazing Philip de Villers

HOW IT WORKS

7:30pm SING-A-LONG SESSION (approx. 90 + minutes)
The plan is to teach you 1 to 2 well known songs that sound great in harmony, isn't too hard to teach or pick up if you've never sung in a group before, and that will leave you wanting more.

9:30pm OPEN MIC SESSION (approx. 90 minutes)
Once the open house sing-a-long session is over, singers who want to experience the lime light or have the confidence to go solo, will have the opportunity to perform in our Open Mic session. We know that in the Glee Clubs there are many hidden talented singers and this little segment allows them to shine and inspire their fellow Gleeks

HOW TO JOIN
1. Simply purchase a ticket for you (and even a friend who needs a boost or a night out)
2. Bring your favourite drink (red, white, beer, spirits, homemade tea or anything you can consume to lubricate your voice box)
3. Email info@adultgleeclub.com.au if you'd like to perform in the Open Mic session

COST: $20 per person and it's BYO (woohoo)

* NOTE - RSVP to this event to be notified of the sungs we'll be singing so you can start getting familiar with it.

Peter Sonic "Mess Around Your Room" Tour

Ian Laidlaw - Didirri.jpg

The need for someone isn’t always pretty, it’s messy. It’s more desperate, like an addict afraid of losing the drug. Sometimes the most powerful expression of a relationship isn’t “you complete me”. It’s “when you’re here, I don’t want to die.”

Produced by Dave Hammer (JEFFE, Nicole Millar, Gideon Benson), the surprisingly uplifting new single “mess around your room” is about being there when it is not convenient, for either party. It’s about sticking around through the mess.

Peter Sonic is a 6”3 powerhouse of emotional melody. Combining southern gothic tunes with a new wave emphasis, it’s the voice that creeps into the back of your mind, it’s the itching urge for disaster.

He also makes coffee. He also really likes to dance.

Peter Sonic will be debuting "mess around your room" and his new live set at The Workers Club, Melbourne on July 3rd, Junk Bar, Brisbane on July 8th, and The Newsagency, Sydney on August 3rd.

Spirit Level presents Sophie Hutchings

Sophie Hutchings banner web res.png

Join pianist and composer Sophie Hutchings for a pair of intimate east coast shows before she heads overseas for her European tour.  She’ll be joined by a pair of friends from Australian artist-run label Spirit Level: Anatole in Sydney, and Braille Face in Melbourne.

Described by MOJO as ‘stirring, vigorous and grandly melodic’ and by The Guardian as ‘intimate and contemplative,’ Sophie Hutchings’ piano compositions sway from the disarmingly fragile to the romantic and epic.

Her beautiful studio work - which led to an Australian Music Prize nomination in 2016 - transfers effortlessly into her renowned live performances, with audiences channelling her emotive awareness, and yielding to her music’s quiet beauty.

Selected recently as one of the top five instrumentalists in the country at the National Live Music Awards, Sophie has opened for artists such as Olafur Arnalds, Federico Albanese and Lambert, and has taken her music on tour around the world. She is also a quiet sensation on streaming services, with over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Joining Sophie in Sydney is Anatole, a young electronic producer who draws from a classical background to produce his signature sound – orchestral techniques combined with beat-driven production. Reminiscent of Bonobo and Taylor McFerrin, his gorgeous hybrid organic-electronic music has caught the attention of UK post-classical record label MercuryKX, where his labelmates now include Luke Howard and Olafur Arnalds, who also appears on a recent Anatole single.

Summoning the energy and secrets of inner city with rock influences harking back to the 70s and 80's, Marz' music is exciting and dangerous. Delivering a taut, focused and sinewy sound devoid of excess, MARZ draws on rock royalty but tempers this with melodic flourishes harking back to the masters of 60s folk.

Anatomy of a Power Pussy by Sophie deLightful

Sophie deLightful_credit Jem King Creative - Sophie deLightful.jpg

Melbourne cabaret star Sophie deLightful (“One of the best voices in Australian cabaret” - Miss Friby) returns to Sydney with her most personal, raw work to date, "Anatomy of a Power Pussy".

This show will be the third Power Pussies production to visit Sydney, and will no doubt continue to pack the room as did its predecessors. It is part of the Power Pussy series Miss deLightful launched in February 2017 in Melbourne, which has also travelled to Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide/Melbourne Fringe festivals, and had reviewers singing her praises (see reviews below).

An exploration of life as a Power Pussy, it will feature real-life stories from the deLightfully sassy bombshell herself, with inspiration from her community of fierce felines. Her signature powerhouse vocals will entice, inspire and excite with heartfelt interpretations and reworkings of classic and modern songs. A sprinkling of the best in local cabaret talent will cap off a night of unforgettable entertainment.

The show will challenge perception and encourage thoughts, tackling issues close to deLightful's heart including life as a queer, love as a performer and loss… as a human. Not just a show for those identifying as female - “Anatomy of a Power Pussy” will appeal to people of all genders from all walks of life. This is a safe space. Being a Power Pussy is about connecting yourself with that feminine sexuality within all of us, that empowering energy that challenges us to be the fiercest versions of ourselves.

“Anatomy of a Power Pussy” teaches there is power from vulnerability as much as boldness. A decisive next step for one of Melbourne’s most ambitious cabaret stars.

“A charged, polished, funny and seriously sexy Fringe experience.” - Good Vibes Melbourne

“Diary of a Power Pussy is a deLightful romp into what it means to be an empowered woman” - The AU Review

Cassandra Kubinski (NYC) - Australian Debut

20160308_Cassandra_Kubinski-1112_r2.jpg

Singer-songwriter Cassandra Kubinski makes her Australian debut with her elegantly emotive pop, which Billy Joel calls "very similar to the singer/songwriters of the late 70's...transcendent."

She is currently on a tour taking her through France, Romania, Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia, and is thrilled to count The Newsagency among her stops.

Cassandra’s songs unearth bare truths within herself and within society, shattering shackling perceptions, and offering forth an exhilarating message of liberation. Her lyrics share lessons from journeys in love, loss, feminism, ambition, sexuality, nature, and self-growth. Her body of work spans three full-length albums, one double-live album, and two EPs. Select standout entries in Cassandra’s oeuvre include the pop-soul inflected “You Never Told Me,” the enlightening Autism anthem “Not So Different,” and the sweetly jaunty “You Get Me.” Each of these tracks is themed around a cause dear to Cassandra’s heart and paired with a video created to further the song’s impact and reach.

Cassandra has had the unique distinction of having recorded and released songs with Billy Joel, The Goo Goo Dolls, Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Chris Botti, and 10,000 Maniacs’ pop singer/multi-instrumentalist Mary Ramsey. Her latest release, the holiday EP, Holiday Magic, debuted at #46 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and received national airplay on over 25 radio stations. In addition, Cassandra has also built a robust profile in Hollywood as a songwriter. She’s earned prime licensing placements in Lifetime’s wildly successful show Dance Moms, which to date has featured 13 of her tunes, and she’s had songs featured on NBC, E! News, and ESPN’S First Take. She is also the bandleader of 2-time Emmy nominated live streaming show The Never Settle Show, hosted by Mario Armstrong. As pop artist with a purpose, she’s an outspoken contributor to, and supporter of, such causes as Autism, Susan G Komen’s Relay for Life, and women’s empowerment, particularly in her role as Global Co-Chair of Membership for Women in Music. Billie McCarthy Takes Up Space

BillieHeroShot (2) - Billie Mccarthy.jpg

Winner of ‘Melbourne Tour Ready Award ‘- 2017 Sydney Fringe Festival
“Billie is the real deal” -Jenny Morris
“I love what Billie does”-Jill Scott

Billie McCarthy has always been too much. Too fat, too opinionated or too passionate. In her award winning cabaret “Billie McCarthy Takes Up Space’ Billie tells the story of her journey from precocious fat kid to unsure young woman to bad boss bitch. Part kick in the guts, part goodnight kiss this show is funny, acerbic, confessional, no holds barred truth.  Billie pulls no punches talking about the pitfalls of modern dating, her very unconventional upbringing, overcoming deep trauma and negotiating the world as an outspoken, unabashed fat woman.

As one of Sydney’s most in demand singers, Billie has performed all over Australia and the world with NGAIIRE, OMAR, CHET FAKER, TUKA and PAUL MAC among others at events such as Java Soul Nation Festival (Indonesia), Groovin' The Moo, Sakifo (Reunion Island), Bluesfest, Brisbane Festival, CMJ (New York), Listen Out, Splendour In The Grass, Culture Collide (Los Angeles) and Sydney Festival…and now she’s bringing all that experience home to tell her tale.

Billie is a country girl who took the jazz bus to the city and had a dirty love affair in a back lane with neo soul. Singing her original Australian music (with some overseas flavor) this show traverses musical genres with ease. Hold on for the ride and Billie will help you see the world for how it really is.

Accompanied by the prodigious talents of Andrew Bruce and Nick Meredith this is a story that is determined to take, up, space!

Steve Grieve and The Mourners Back On Top Down Under tour - 'Caterpillar Maze' Album Launch

Steve Grieve and The Mourners inhabit a virtual Neverland of hazy musical dreams, outback chicanery, and hybrid rock, roots and urbane blues edifices - that’s correct. Since its fiery inception some decades ago in Canberra the band has been a vehicle for the songwriting of Steve Grieve (guitar) and Dan Myles (vocals). Performing alongside iconic acts Dr. Feelgood, Johnny Winter, and Lonnie Mack, the band enjoys an improbable yet mythical cult status on an increasingly vast yet desultory Australian musical landscape.

The new album Caterpillar Maze has received much critical acclaim since its release in December 2017 - featuring continuously in the top 15 of the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Charts, and most recently nominated in the Independent Blues Broadcaster’s Association (UK) top four “Presenter's Picks of the Month” for May 2018.

The band boasts a stellar and committed cast of players - Greg Royal on bass (Wendy Matthews, Kate Ceberano, Ian Moss), Mick Skelton on drums (Baby Animals, Thirsty Merc, Sarah McLeod) and Brendan St. Ledger on keyboards (Glenn Shorrock, Marcia Hines, Lily Dior). Dan is recently returned from a 14 year hiatus in the US where, immersed in both West and East coast music scenes, he also recorded a fine solo album. Steve’s other performance credits include lengthy stints with Margaret Urlich, Christine Anu and sundry others, including both Elvin Bishop and the legendary Jimmy Witherspoon.

The ‘Back On Top Down Under’ tour will feature the band performing tunes from their back catalogue as well as from Caterpillar Maze, and promises to be a truly unique and inspired affair. Musicians of this calibre performing new and acclaimed Australian work such as this is rare and noteworthy, and qualifies this limited run of shows as must see events for roots, blues and rock music aficionados.

“Albums like these are what makes music the addictive injection it is, and more so when they arrive unexpectedly and wallop you like a ten ton tablet.” - Duncan Smith, Top Shelf Music 89.7FM

Julian Curwin & Jane Sheldon 'Crossing' Album Launch w/ Showa 44 + Bonniesongs

Romero Records is excited to announce the release of 'Crossing', the new collaboration between classical soprano Jane Sheldon (Pinchgut Opera, The Song Company, Elena Kats-Chernin, John Zorn) and guitarist Julian Curwin (The Tango Saloon, The Mango Balloon, Cannibal Spiders, Monsieur Camembert).

The pair first joined forces in experimental electronic pop band Gauche in the early 2000s (whose back-catalogue has just been re-released by Art As Catharsis). Now, more than a decade later, they bring together all of their intervening musical experiences for 'Crossing'. Though difficult to neatly categorise, a shared love for western film scores, folk song and early music may give some clues. 'Crossing' is music that evokes other lands, sometimes real, often imaginary.

cultural landscape, so you’ll have that sweet, non-repetitive, diversified content that
everyone's always frothing over these days

Jamie Hutchings 'Bedsit' Allbum Launch + special guest, Sophie Hutchings

Jamie Hutchings performs at The Newsagency as part of his national tour in support of his fourth solo album, and first in seven years -  Bedsit. Bedsit was self recorded by Hutchings live to a 90’s era 16 track tape machine on the outskirts of Bathurst in early 2016. It features little else but Jamie’s voice and guitar, Reuben Wills’ double bass and occasionally Jamie’s younger sister, renowned pianist Sophie Hutchings. The performance will see Jamie draw deep from what is now a deep body of work, from Bluebottle Kiss, Infinity Broke through to his current solo material.  He will be ably assisted by Reuben Wills on double bass.

Jamie Hutchings is a Sydney based singer/songwriter/guitarist and sometime producer. He began his career as the frontman for much loved underground favourites Bluebottle Kiss in the 1990’s through to the noughties.

The group released six acclaimed albums and toured many times around Australia as well as North America and the UK where some of their material was also released. Of the band, All Music in the US said “…this is challenging, rugged, dramatic rock with folk tendencies woven intricately into its coarse fabric.” He has released four solo albums, two albums with the percussion heavy quartet Infinity Broke as well as a recent album in collaboration with Peter Fenton called The Tall Grass.

A frequent live performer, Hutchings’ music has seen him tour throughout Europe numerous times, North America and even China. His production work has involved artists such as Peabody, The Maladies and Mark Moldre and he has guested and collaborated with artists such as Paul Dempsey and Peter Garrett. His other interests include literature, surfing and wine. He is quite messy and cooks poorly.

"Jamie Hutchings writes songs that are epic, tender and mean" - THE THOUSANDS

“Jamie [Hutchings'] musical journey is one the most interesting, passionate and singular musical odysseys in Australian music." - John O’Donnell (Author of 100 Best Australian Albums)

“There is no song which doesn't leave you moved, slightly shifted in your own bubble in a way that can’t be quickly remedied. That’s a sign of a very fine songwriter, one of our best." - Bernard Zuel, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Special guest on the night will be Jamie’s sister, acclaimed pianist and composer Sophie Hutchings. Over the past eighteen months Sophie has released two critically acclaimed albums, Wide Asleep and Yonder, completed her first European tour as well as performing at Tasmanian based arts festival Dark Mofo. Her compositions have been described by music bible Mofo Magazine as

Stirring, vigorous,[and] grandly melodic’.

KEVIN WELCH (USA) & JUSTIN BERNASCONI

KEVIN WELCH (USA) & JUSTIN BERNASCONI

Two of the world’s finest singer/songwriters/guitarists together for one night only in the intimate surroundings of The Newsagency.

Kevin Welch has had a career spanning four decades, as a recording artist and producer, and writing songs for others such as Roger Miller, Waylon Jennings, The Highwaymen, Solomon Burke, Linda Ronstadt, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, and many others, including most recently Chris Stapleton, whose version of Welch’s MILLIONAIRE went to No. 1 on iTunes in the first week of release.

Recording a dozen records over the years, most for Dead Reckoning Records, the label he co- founded in Nashville in the mid 90's, his music has carried him around and around the planet, often touring with his son Dustin Welch. With a new Australian wife and baby, Welch is spending more time than ever Down Under. Coming soon, Kevin Welch: The Dead Reckoning Years, a double LP celebrating 1995-2005, followed by a collection of brand new songs recently recorded back in Nashville with a killer line-up of some of the world’s finest. As yet untitled, it will be released in the Spring of 2018.

Named as ‘One of this country’s most interesting guitar talents’ by Australian Guitar Magazine, Justin Bernasconi is a rarity among guitarists and songwriters. Straddling styles and sounds from the Delta Blues, Appalachian Bluegrass, English Folk and all stops in between, his highly original tunes are infused with exciting and soulful guitar playing.

Bernasconi’s 2017 album Barefoot Wonderland has been embraced by fans and critics with Acoustic Magazine describing it as ‘a dazzling gumbo of songs’ and was equally acclaimed by Rolling Stone, and The Age. Justin embarked on nationwide Australian tour, and flew to the UK launch the album in London. UK mag fRoots simply wrote “like Leo Kottke and John Fahey on the instrumentals and John Prine on the songs’.

BRYCE HALLIDAY: BACK TO BASICS

2016 Back To Basics 5 - Bryce Halliday.jpg

ryce Halliday has wasted the last few years of his life writing musicals and scores for video games, film and theatre when he should have been performing for you!

A stalwart at the former Newsagency premises, Bryce returns to the new venue in Annandale to get back to doing what he does best: Singing beautiful songs, telling funny stories and playing a damn fine piana.

Bryce will perform a set of hits from his last few tours to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe, Sydney Comedy Festival and Hayes Theatre.

Maybe he’ll even do a tune from that musical he keeps banging on about.

“Halliday is charismatic and open with the audience, creating a captivating atmosphere for the show. His songs embrace a diverse range of sounds, from heartfelt ballads to comic, up-tempo piano numbers.” Aussie Theatre.

“Halliday’s voice is as smooth as his delivery and his musicality is first rate.” - Daily Review

Meatloaf: In the Raw starring Fi Pearson

Cabaret performer Fiona Pearson (KelFi & FiKel, Lady Sings It Better) is back as MEAT LOAF as you’ve never seen him before: stripped back, sensual, and sweaty (OK, you’ve probably seen the sweaty part).

Humiliated by his lacklustre performance at the AFL grand final (his vocal chords were haemorrhaging, guys) Meat Loaf is back in Australia, returning for an intimate, acoustic performance at Sydney’s premiere new cabaret venue, The Newsagency.

Fans will be blown away by the chance to hear tales from his rock n roll life, and revisit his classic bangers Bat out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad, and of course, I Would Do Anything for Love.

Directed by Jack Yabsley, musically directed by Mark Chamberlain, and starring Emma Deans, Meat Loaf: In The Raw, is a chance to get cozy with the musical front man once starred as the bus driver in Spice World: The Movie, and who also brought us the 5th bestselling album of all time.

Nerissa Campbell (AUS/USA)

Nerissa Campbell returns to Australia as part of a multi-city tour that explores a musical shift that introduces guitar heavy elements with layered effects, and will include both new music and songs from her acclaimed past four albums.

Campbell’s music weaves its way through somber pop-ballads, bluesy folk songs, moody instrumentals, and a lyricism full of thought and space that creates a depth of feeling beyond the obvious. She creates a fine blend of styles dipped in a smoky batter of late night living.

A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, she has called New York home since 2001. A long term member of NY’s Balinese Gamelan Dharma Swara, she has also been the feature vocalist in post-metal band, A Storm of Light.

Nerissa has performed at Basilica Soundscape (Hudson NY), Festival Centro (Bogota Colombia), Roadburn Music Festival (Tilburg, NL), Singapore Arts Festival, Stanford Jazz Festival (Stanford, USA), Perth International Arts Festival (Perth, AUS), Asymmetry Festival (Wroclaw, PO), as well as at clubs throughout Europe, USA, Canada, & Australia. Her music was featured in ‘Freddy’s - the Documentary’ (screened at Brooklyn International Film Festival), ‘Stranger Love’ (original music performed as part of Eva Minemar & Tony Lepore’s play). She has been a part of performative literary readings, modern dance pieces, off-Broadway plays, and a 32-piece orchestra.

Nerissa brings her show to her home shores in April & May 2018, touring her worldly & atmospheric songs.

“Smoky voiced songs of good bourbon and bad love affairs” – Time Out London

“....melancholic, Cat Power-like lyrics, a Billie Holiday-esque timbre and a touch of Norah Jones in her swooping croon, tumultuous emotions characterize Nerissa Campbell’s [music]”. – Xpress Magazine

Shaun Kirk: Howlin' at the Moon Single Launch

Following the recent success of his Australian ‘Midnight in Motion’ Tour which saw award winning blues/soul troubadour Shaun Kirk selling out numerous headline shows across the country; the one man dynamo has announced a stack of new tour dates across Australia & New Zealand to launch his soon to be released new single ‘Howlin at the Moon’.

Kirk’s first release in over 3 years will come off the back of what the 29 year old describes as a “quarter-life crisis” ignited by a US record deal that fell through in questionable circumstances back in 2015.

Determined to overcome his disappointment and grow from it, Kirk has since spent countless hours soul searching and honing his skills as a writer and musician inside his home studio on the outskirts of Melbourne; prevailing with a fresh new sound and groove to carry him into the next phase of his ever evolving career.

Recorded and co-produced with Nick Huggins (Jen Cloher, Fraser A Gorman, Skipping Girl Vinegar) at A Pocket Full of Stones Studios in the sleepy beachside town of Point Lonsdale, Victoria and co written with ARIA Award Winner Joel Quatermain (Eskimo Joe) – ‘Howlin at the Moon’ is set to drop in early 2018.
